The Gap Theory (also known as "Reconstructive Creation")

Before you are led astray, I'll let you know that there is no scriptural evidence to support this theory. It is contrary to the fossil record. It omits the humans, insects, mammals, and fish that are also found fossilized with the dinosaurs.

This theory tries to reconcile the long geologic eras of Evolutionary thought into the days of Genesis. Those who support this theory say that there was a "gap" of millions of years between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.

They claim that this is where Lucifer fell from heaven, and God judged Lucifer and the dinosaurs living on the earth destroying them both. Then allegedly God took 6 days to fix the world back.

Some people take this verse to mean that when God says that the earth was "without form, and void" he was talking about some type of judgment on a previous race of creatures. They believe that this judgment left the earth in this wrecked condition.

The problem is, there is no scriptural basis for this argument.

Had this been what God intended the verse to say, it would be far more clear. And there would be dozens of other references to it in scripture.

Many believe that the "Gap Theory" would tend to make God appear as a bit of a slob, unable to clean up his mess after destroying a previous world.

Why would God leave us a dirty (death and fossil filled) world to live in? You would not knock down a building leaving the debris there, and build another building on top of the trash. But this is exactly what those who believe in the gap theory claim God did.

At the end of the Creation week, God said that his Creation was "very good". Now why in the world would God call it "very good" if there were millions of fossils of dead animals laying around?

The Bible speaks of the bones and bodies of the dead as being "unclean". (Numbers 5:2 "defiled by the dead" / Leviticus 21:11 / Leviticus 22:4 "whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead" and about 30 other places in the Bible say that bones are unclean) .

If we are made unclean by touching or going near the bodies of the deceased, then how can God call the world "perfect" in Genesis chapter 1 if the very world he had made was corrupted by dead dinosaurs, mammals and humans? The answer is, it wasn't. Nothing died before Adam sinned (Genesis chapter 3).

If there were tons of bones lying around then this would not coincide with a perfect creation. It is clear from scripture that these animals died sometime later.

Since the most obvious literal interpretation of Genesis would suggest that there never was an earth before we got here , then the for the Gap theory to be true, then you would have to believe that God is unable to say what he means. Since God tells us plainly that all land animals were made on day 6, along with man, then it is obvious that dinosaurs lived with man, not millions of years before.

If there was a previous world before ours then surely God would make many references to its judgment in scripture. Yet none are found. If there was a world here before ours, then Jesus would have told us about it. It would be foolish not to, we would find out anyway in our excavations. God knows better than to let us try to reconstruct the past based on what we find (fossils etc). Because natural man does not come up with supernatural (Bible based) ideas of earths history on his own. We would come up with our own story of what we thought happened, and this may lead us away from God. So God did tell us what happened. He told us there was a flood in the days of Noah, and we can see that the fossils we find are a result of that flood.

Those who believe in the gap theory say that Lucifer was judged prior to the creation of the earth. But this is also not true.

If Lucifer/ Satan were running around causing havoc before man was created, then surely God would not say at the end of each day that He looked upon all He saw, and behold, it was "very good".

Satan became jealous of God, and the position of authority over the earth that God had given Adam. We are not told how many years after man was created, that Lucifer sinned. We do know that it was after the 6th day when the Garden of Eden was Created, for in Ezekiel 28:13 we are told that Lucifer was "in the garden of Eden" and he was perfect in the day that he was Created.

Lucifer still had not sinned after this, for on the seventh day God once again says that His Creation was "very good".

We cannot put a year on Lucifer’s rebellion against God. We can only make an educated guess. Lucifer sinned after the 7th day, but before Adam and Eve were able to conceive a child. Their 3'rd child of Adam and Eve that is mentioned by name is Set. Adam and Eve likely had other children both before and after Seth was born.

Seth was born when Adam was 130. We are not told their age when Cain and Abel were born. But the fall of Lucifer and the fall of man were in-between this time (after the Creation was complete, but before Eve had children).

Many who support the Gap Theory say that in Genesis 1:28, God told Adam to "replenish" the earth. They claim that this meant that Adam was to refill the world that had become empty and void of life due to some form of judgment from God.

But this argument is in error. For the Hebrew word "male" which was translated "replenish" in 1611 does not mean "to fill again". In 1611 the word replenish simply meant "to fill" (as in the First time). Many of the words we use today once had other meanings.

The Bible clearly teaches that there was no death of man or animals before sin. The Gap Theory ignores these theological boundaries imposed by scripture itself.

The words translated "in vain" in Isaiah 45:18 is the Hebrew word tohu (Morris, The Defenders Study Bible, pg 760)

Genesis 1:2 says that "the earth was without form" - that is, tohu. Isaiah 45 says that God did not "create" the earth tohu so gap theorists claim that it must have become "tohu" by some sort of cataclysm. If such judgment existed, Christ would have referenced it dozens of times, instead he refers only to the flood of Noah. A flood which adequately explains the presence, and formation of sedimentary rock.

If the reason for accepting the gap theory, is to allow one to believe in the bible, and still hold to the alleged millions of years of the geologic column, then gap theorists fail to realize that this imaginary cataclysm would have destroyed and rearranged the very layers of rock they use the gap theory to explain in the first place.

The only reason silly theories like these exist in the first place is because many Christians do not know how dinosaurs fit in with Biblical history, so they try to cram millions of years into the bible – even when the text of the bible won’t allow it. They also do this because they trust mans theories (like evolution), which often change, over the word of God which remains the same.

Fossils

Fossils are the preserved remains of animals, plants, and other organisms from the remote past.

Found on http://www.fossils-facts-and-finds.com/fossil_formation.html

When it comes to fossil formation Permineralization is the most common process for preserving ancient plant and animal material. Common is a relative term when used in regards to fossils. Though there are millions of fossils that have been discovered and millions more waiting to be discovered, fossilization is a rare occurrence.

Fossil Formation Is A Rare Occurence
There have been untold billions of creatures that have lived on the planet. When conditions on Earth caused mass extinctions, literally thousands, perhaps hundreds-of-thousands of species went extinct. For these species to be preserved, a series of truly fortunate events had to have occurred. If even one of these events failed, that animal or species would never be seen by modern eyes.

Nature Recycles
Because of this, fossilization is actually a rare occurrence. It goes against the laws of nature that favor recycling. Just about everything that exists naturally on the planet, animals, plants, rocks and minerals, are designed to be reused or reformed to support some other species or life-form.

Food For Thought
Let’s narrow it down to animal species for a moment. All animals are designed to be someone else’s lunch. All parts, even the leftover bones, can be consumed by one species or another…right down to the bacteria that decomposes the sturdiest bones and shells. This makes a very bad situation for the formation of fossils. Since every part is designed to be gobbled up, the fossilization process has to happen before someone or something gets a hold of the food!

fossil formation step 1Fossil Formation
In the first step of fossil formation an animal or plant must die in water or near enough to fall in shortly after death. The water insulates the remains from many of the elements that contribute to decomposition. In the following example a trilobite has died of old age on the bottom of the sea. Bacteria consume the soft body parts but leave the hard exoskeleton intact.

Sedimentation
As time passes, sediments (the matter that settles to the bottom of a liquid) bury the exoskeleton. The faster this happens the more likely fossilization will occur. Land and mud slides definitely help. River deltas are also good for quick accumulation of sediments. This further insulates our trilobite from decomposition. Now we have fossil formation in progress.

fossil formation step 2The sediments themselves have a huge influence on how well our trilobite fossil turns out. Very fine grained particles, like clays, allow more detail in the future fossil. Course sediments, like sand, allow less detail to show. The chemical make up of the sediments also contributes to the future fossil. If iron is present, it may give the rock a reddish color. Phosphates may darken the rock to gray or black. The possibilities are truly endless.

Permineralization
As the sediments continue to pile on, the lower layers become compacted by the weight of the layers on top. Over time, this pressure turns the sediments into rock.

fossil formation step 3

If mineral-rich water percolates down through the sediments, the fossil formation process has an even better chance of preserving our ancient animal. Some of the minerals stick to the particles of sediment, effectively gluing them together into a solid mass. These minerals make an impact on our original trilobite as well. Over the course of thousands of years, they dissolve away the outer shell, sometimes replacing the molecules of exoskeleton with molecules of calcite or other minerals. In time the entire shell is replaced leaving rock in the exact shape of the trilobite. That is fossil formation at work.

fossil formation step 4

Uplift
As the continental plates move around the earth, crashing into each other, mountains are formed. Former sea floors are lifted up and become dry land. This is exactly what has happened to our trilobite in the picture below. Now fossil formation is complete but our trilobite is buried under hundreds or even thousands of feet of rock! Thanks to the movement of the plates, our trilobite will come closer to the surface and nearer to discovery by some fortunate fossil hunter. Luckily nothing stays the same.

fossil formation complete

Erosion at work
Fossil formation is revealed by erosion. Wind, rain, freeze and thaw, even earthquakes will help force the trilobite out of its burial ground and out into the light. If he or she is lucky enough, the trilobite will reveal itself in time to be spotted by a rock-hounder or fossil-digger. Who knows? It could even be YOU!

Dinosaurs

As you know, a million is a big number. HUGE. To think that evolutionists believe that dinosaurs 'ruled the earth' 65 million years ago completely boggles my mind...to the point where I find it extremely hard to believe.

Taking a look at the Bible, Genesis talks about God creating the first man and woman on the sixth day. Many facts about when their children and their children's children were born are given, and these genealogies are recorded throughout the Old Testament up until the time of Jesus Christ. There is nothing that suggests that these chronologies lasted millions of years.

Adding up the dates and accepting that Jesus came almost 2000 years ago, I've concluded that the creation of Earth and the animals (including the dinosaurs) occurred only thousands of years ago (possibly 6000).

The Bible tells us that all the land animals were created on the sixth day. As dinosaurs were land animals, they must've been created on this day, alongside Adam and Eve.

Genesis 1:24 : Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Before I go any further, I'll share the theory of evolutionists. Evolutionists claim that dinosaurs evolved over millions of years. They imagined that one kind of animal slowly changed over long periods of time into a different kind of animal. For example, they believe that amphibians changed into reptiles (including dinosaurs) by this gradual process. This would mean, of course, that there would have been millions of creatures during that time that would be “in between,” as amphibians evolved into reptiles. Evidence of these “transitional forms,” as they are called, should be abundant. However, many fossil experts admit that not one unquestionable transitional form between any group of creatures and another has been found anywhere. If dinosaurs evolved from amphibians, there should be, for example, fossil evidence of animals that are part dinosaur and part something else. However, there is no proof of this anywhere. In fact, if you go into any museum you will see fossils of dinosaurs that are 100% dinosaur, not something in between. There are no 25%, 50%, 75%, or even 99% dinosaurs—they are all 100% dinosaur!

If God created dinosaurs, he would've made them fully functional, designed to do what they were created for, and would've been 100% dinosaur.

Again, in Genesis, it testifies that because of the world's corrupt state, God warned Noah that He was going to destroy the world with a Flood. He therefore commanded him to build a great ship (the Ark) so that all kinds of land animals (which must've included the dinosaurs) and Noah's family could survive on board while the Flood destroyed the earth.

Many believe that dinosaurs were too large and that there were too many of them to go on this Ark. However, contrary to what's been to us, there were only about 50 different kinds of dinosaurs. There are certainly hundreds of dinosaur names, but many of these were given to just a bit of bone or skeletons of the same dinosaur found in other countries. It is also reasonable to assume that different sizes, varieties, and sexes of the same kind of dinosaur have ended up with different names. For example, look at the many different varieties and sizes of dogs, but they are all the same kind—the dog kind!

Well, what happened to all the land animals that did not go on the Ark? Very simply, they drowned. Many would have been covered with tons of mud as the rampaging water covered the land. Because of this quick burial, many of the animals would have been preserved as fossils. If this happened, you would expect to find evidence of billions of dead things buried in rock layers (formed from this mud) all over the Earth. This is exactly what you do find.
And, just so you know, the Flood probably would've occurred 4500 years ago; not millions.

If the different kinds of dinosaurs survived the Flood, then they must have come off the Ark and lived in the post-Flood world.

In the Bible, in Job 40:15-24, God describes to Job (who lived after the Flood) a great beast with which Job was familiar. This great animal, called “behemoth,” is described as “the chief of the ways of God,” perhaps the biggest land animal God had created. Impressively, he moved his tail like a cedar tree! Although some Bible commentaries say this may have been an elephant or hippopotamus, the description actually fits that of a dinosaur like Brachiosaurus. Elephants and hippos certainly do not have tails like cedar trees!

Actually, very few animals are singled out in the Bible for such a detailed description. Contrary to what many may think, what we know now as dinosaurs get more mention in the Scriptures than most animals! So dinosaurs—all the different kinds—must have lived alongside of people after the Flood.

Interestingly, the word “dragon” is used a number of times in the Old Testament. In most instances, the word dinosaur could substitute for dragon and it would fit very nicely. Creation scientists believe that dinosaurs were called dragons before the word dinosaur was invented in the 1800s.

Unfortunately, all of this evidence is considered invalid to evolutionists, simply because their belief is that man and dinosaurs did not live at the same time. However, the more research there is on historical literature, the more we realize there is overwhelming evidence that dragons were real beasts, much like our modern reconstructions of dinosaurs, and that their existence has been recorded by many different people, even just hundreds of years ago.

Evolutionists have given many theories explaining why dinosaurs became exist, which include: starvation; they died from overeating; they were poisoned; they became blind from cataracts and could not reproduce; mammals ate their eggs. Other causes include volcanic dust, poisonous gases, comets, sunspots, meteorites, mass suicide, constipation, parasites, shrinking brain (and greater stupidity), slipped discs, changes in the composition of air, etc.

At the time of the Flood, many of the sea creatures died, but some survived. In addition, all of the land creatures outside the Ark died, but the representatives of all the kinds that survived on the Ark lived in the new world after the Flood. Those land animals (including dinosaurs) found the new world to be much different than the one before the Flood. Due to (1) competition for food that was no longer in abundance, (2) other catastrophes, (3) man killing for food (and perhaps for fun), and (4) the destruction of habitats, etc., many species of animals eventually died out. The group of animals we now call dinosaurs just happened to die out too. In fact, quite a number of animals become extinct each year. Extinction seems to be the rule in Earth history (not the formation of new types of animals as you would expect from evolution).
